Timeless ideals
The ideals of science and medicine do not change. Discover what is true. Turn it into something that heals. Care for the person in front of you. Advance the field for the people who come after, and serve humanity rather than a fortunate few. Intelligence, passion, commitment, sacrifice: each of them gave a life to these ideals. And each of them, in turn, gave that standard to Dr. Mondana Ghias, and through her, to Tono.
The chain
Medicine advances in a chain: a discovery becomes a treatment, a treatment becomes care, and care has to reach the person who needs it. Our mentors lived the whole arc, from the bench to the bedside. What they could not do from inside one institution was reach everyone. That is our link.

His pioneering work on B cells laid the groundwork for modern biologic therapies and precision oncology, the foundation of the treatments Tono physicians prescribe every day. He mentored Dr. Ghias at the NIH.

A scientist at the NIH and the National Cancer Institute whose work contributed to advances against HIV and Hepatitis C. Born in Tehran and trained across continents, she is Dr. Ghias’s mother, and the first teacher of the standard.

A renowned dermatologist whose research laid the foundations for modern HS biologics. He trained Dr. Ghias as a fellow; their collaborative work was recognized by JAAD as one of the top three game-changing studies in dermatology.

His Nobel Prize-winning discoveries transformed neuroscience by revealing how brain cells communicate. Dr. Ghias collaborated with his Rockefeller lab, publishing research that advanced the field.

What we inherited
For their generation, the frontier was molecular biology, virology, and immunology. For ours, it is the convergence of medicine and AI. The breakthroughs they made possible mean little if they reach only a fortunate few.
