About Tono
Starting in dermatology, we’re building for the next era of specialty care.

At a glance
Tono cares for patients directly and alongside health systems, cancer centers, and referring clinicians across the country, virtually and in person.

Our thesis
At Tono, AI works before, during, and after the encounter: assembling clinical context, supporting physician judgment, and coordinating the work around care. But medicine is not a technology problem to be automated away. It is a human craft built on knowledge, evidence, judgment, and trust.

Read why Tono exists
The most important technology in medicine is still clinical judgment. Tono brings together leading dermatologists and subspecialists who have trained, taught, researched, and practiced at the world’s leading institutions — and builds around them.

The people behind Tono
The future of medicine will not be built by physicians or technologists alone. At Tono, dermatologists, subspecialists, engineers, designers, and operators work together to rethink how specialty medicine is practiced and delivered. Physicians bring clinical judgment, scientific depth, and an understanding of what patients need. Builders create the intelligence and infrastructure that help that expertise travel farther.

Physicians
At the frontier of specialty medicine: subspecialists who publish the research, pioneer the treatments, and care for the diseases others refer out.
Engineers, designers, operators, and scientists creating the tools that extend a great physician’s reach.
Our story
01 — At the frontier
At the National Institutes of Health, the National Cancer Institute, Rockefeller University, and leading specialty centers in New York, we saw medicine at its frontier: extraordinary physicians, increasingly specialized expertise, and new therapies changing the course of diseases that had once been extraordinarily difficult to treat.
Science was moving faster. Treatments were becoming more powerful. Patients were traveling across the country to reach the physicians and centers capable of delivering them — and when they did, the outcomes could be life-changing.
02 — Far from it
But we also knew what medicine looked like far from those centers. Growing up in the Midwest, distance itself was often a measure of how serious an illness had become. The harder the problem, the farther patients traveled — to a larger city, an academic center, or sometimes across the country — to find the specialist they needed.
03 — The opportunity
Telehealth had already shown that technology could fundamentally alter access to care. But specialty medicine required more than putting an existing appointment on a screen. It required bringing together exceptional physicians at the forefront of their fields, technology built around how specialists actually practice, and a care model designed for a world in which expertise no longer had to be constrained by geography.
So we built Tono around the physician, and began redesigning everything surrounding specialty care so that world-class medicine could reach more people, wherever they are.

Each generation inherits the progress of those who came before, and the responsibility to carry it forward. For ours, that frontier lies at the intersection of medicine, technology, and AI.
